Wanted convicted felon arrested for firearm possession, resisting arrest and other charges Sunday afternoon

A previously convicted felon who was in possession of a handgun was arrested on Sunday afternoon after Central District officers encountered him while on routine patrol.

At just before 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2025, Knoxville Police Department officers spotted 31-year-old Julius Darden sitting in a lawn chair under the Broadway Viaduct at 505 Depot Avenue, where no trespassing signs are posted. Officers approached Darden and learned that he had an outstanding warrant for felony vandalism, which originated from an incident that happened in June on McConnell Street.

Officers then proceeded to take Darden into custody, at which time Darden began to walk towards his backpack sitting nearby and a struggle ensued. Additional officers arrived on scene and Darden was eventually taken into custody.

A search of Darden’s backpack revealed a loaded Glock handgun. A records check later revealed that Darden has a prior felony conviction for multiple counts of obtaining drugs by fraud.

A KPD officer sustained minor injuries during the struggle with Darden, was evaluated for a concussion at the UT Medical Center and cleared at around midnight.

Darden was taken into custody for his outstanding warrant and charged with convicted felon in possession of a weapon, indecent exposure, resisting arrest and criminal trespass.
